DAMASCUS: KLIA Informatik Sdn Bhd, an airport information technology (IT) specialist, expects to achieve single-digit growth in its order book for this financial year ending June 30 (FY09), said general manager Azrina Yusof.
KLIA Informatik is the IT solutions and consulting arm of KLIA Premier Holdings Sdn Bhd, a privatised entity evolved from KLIA Bhd – formerly a government-linked company tasked to develop the KL International Airport.
Due to domestic demand, KLIA Informatik was established as an airport IT specialist.
The company was in the midst of tendering for projects worth about RM110mil in Oman, Azrina said.

The Oman tenders involved IT works at the Muscat International Airport, which would be the company’s second overseas contract and its biggest job to date if its bids were successful, she added.
Azrina said despite the slowdown, there were still many opportunities in IT upgrading works in many countries due to rising air traffic volume.
Potential projects include providing IT solutions for Nagpur Airport in India and Riyadh University in Saudi Arabia.
“The results of these tenders would be known before the end of this year,” Azrina told reporters in Damascus, where KLIA Informatik was in the midst of completing its first project abroad.
The project involves upgrading the IT systems at the Damascus International Airport, worth RM18mil and expected to be ready this month.
“Besides the Middle East, India also looks promising in terms of abundant business opportunities for the company,” she said, adding that it had recently received enquiries from India-based Wipro Technologies on its airport system solutions.
On the local front, the company is awaiting results of tenders such as upgrading the traffic management system for the Malaysian Highway Authority.
“Our focus is to develop technology-based solutions for various transportation systems, regardless (whether it is) air, sea or land,” Azrina told StarBiz. Projects being completed by the company include IT works for the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Batu Berendam Airport in Malacca and the Seremban-Gemas double-tracking rail system.

Going forward, KLIA Informatik intends to focus on research and development (R&D) to increase its product range and improve its competitive edge.
“After applying for Multimedia Super Corridor status from the Multimedia Development Corp, we intend to apply for a grant with a maximum of RM2mil as well as double our staff strength for R&D purposes,” Azrina said.
